General Custer, who was a fan of "Self Help" by Samuel Smiles:
 General Custer
He was a prolific general in the American Civil War, most noted for his personal bravery.
He was one of the youngest Generals in the Union Army (at 23), and one of the most flamboyant.
And certainly one of the best known.
He died at the Battle of Little Bighorn on 25th June 1876.
Which on a personal note was 100 years to the day before I was born!

But it is one other fact for which we are interested in him here.
He described "Self Help" by Samuel Smiles as "one of his favourite volumes".
Before going into these historical battles, he read the same words that you too could soon be reading.
All his successes, all achieved at such a young age.
And all inspired by the same book.
