Now if I were to ask you - what would be the ultimate testimonial for a book?
A successful businessman?
Done that (remember Frank Hornby?).
A famous general of an army?
Done that (General Custer anyone?)
How about royalty then?
Can't get too much higher than that!
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of the Queen of England.
Founder of the Duke of Edinburgh awards, which are designed to show children how to grow up and live meaningful, independent, successful lives.
Sound familiar?
I tell you all this because, as you might have guessed, the Duke of Edinburgh is also a fan of "Self Help" by Samuel Smiles.
In fact a recent article in a UK paper quoted his royal Highness as suggesting that "copies of Smiles's seminal work... should be dispatched forthwith to every bishop in the country."
Whether or not it was we shall have to wait to find out!
But the main thing to take home with you is that this is a book that has been read at the highest echelons of society.
And that is because it works.
That is why the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and other similar bodies for children preach the same messages that are in the book.
